Action's history
Action was established in 1981, originally just to provide somewhere to live for adults leaving prison; in fact, initially, we were known as the ‘Sheffield and Rotherham Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders’. We operated solely in Sheffield and Rotherham, the latter being where we still have our head office today.
The word ‘Action’ originates as far back as the late 14th century and encapsulates the sense of something being done, an act or a deed. We know that actions really do speak louder than words.
Close to the community
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
We worked very closely with South Yorkshire Probation during the 80s and 90s as part of a local, pioneering piece of work that brought the statutory and third sector worlds together.
Probation was determined not to be limited by their statutory responsibilities and understood the importance of undertaking wider support work in order to have the greatest impact on the individual, their family, and community. We were one of the key, local organisations to share these values and our growth is directly linked to this mutual desire to make a difference in people’s lives.
Expanding our service area
HELPING MORE COMMUNITIES
In 2002, we expanded significantly in terms of geography and remit as we began working with people who had substance misuse and mental ill health issues as well as those who had experienced homelessness. This continued as we expanded into Young People’s Services in 2008 and Domestic Abuse Services in 2012. Over the years, we have acquired a substantial stock of supported housing and we became a Registered Provider of Social Housing in 2011.

In 2021, we became a Homes England partner and started our program of property development and private sector leasing.
